Time to live

I’m not usually a big fan of sci-fi, but Bladerunner is one of my favourite films. It’s often referred to as a meditation on what it means to be human, though for me it’s all about mortality. “I want more life,” says Batty to the android designer when he, quite literally, meets his maker.

Travel can be about a slow accumulation of tiny eddies which, when put together, forms a powerful current of experience which slowly but firmly moulds you into the product of all those experiences. But it can also be about the ‘big numbers’: those special moments that live in your memory for decades afterwards.

Maybe it’s diving at night in the Pacific and feeling like you’re in deep space, maybe it’s standing on a mountain in the most intense silence you’ve ever known; or maybe it’s just a particularly pretty sunset at the end of a bad day, that felt like a personal present to you.

For me, this scene in Bladerunner sums up that feeling of awe that accompanies those memories. The rush of returning joy in a reverie for things seen, feelings contemplated, souls touched. Those moments where, for maybe just for a few seconds, you felt a direct connection with the universe. The time, as always, is now. It’s time to live.
